CAPE COBRA CLUB
Cape Town, South Africa
6th November 2011 - Cape Classic Car Show - Parow

This year we teamed up with our colleagues from Live To Race and 14 LTR cars, including 9 Cobras were amongst the approximately 1200 cars on display. The public seemed to enjoy the sunny day, so it was well supported.

1st October 2011 - Whales & Wheels - Hermanus

There were 6 Cobra's at this year's Whales & Wheels show in Hermanus as part of the Whale Festival, and the weather played along for the whole weekend even though it was very cold driving there.

26th June 2011 - Live to Race - Killarney

How kind is Cape Town weather to the Cobra Club - after a good few days of rain, it clears up to a sunny afternoon when 8 Cobra's mingled with many other cars to provide rides for the children and guests of the Live to Race charity.

12th June 2011 - Morgenhof Lunch

After meeting at various places enroute, 9 Cobra's took a short ride out the back of Stellenbosch and over Hell's Hoogte in glorious sunshine and ended up at Morgenhof for a great relaxed winter's lunch.

10th April 2011 - Riverside Lunch

What a fantastic day for driving the Cobra - but sadly only 3 cars ventured into the sun for a great lunch at the Riverside in Franschhoek.

6th March 2011 - Uitkyk picnic

Great weather welcomed 7 Cobra's on the drive via the N2, Grabouw and Franschhoek to Uitkyk where we enjoyed a very relaxed picnic.

12th & 13th February 2011 - George Old Car Show

This was the first time the CCC attended the show in George, being represented by only 3 club cars who were joined by 4 other Cobra's from the surrounding area. We believe there were over 1000 cars on display on Saturday (with quite a few less on Sunday), so there was plenty to view. There was also an original 1956 aluminium body AC Aceca with a Bristol engine on display (see gallery picture). At lunch time, about 15 cars were put up for auction, some selling at bargain prices.

5th & 6th February 2011 - Killarney 50th anniversary

Although not as many overseas cars were racing this weekend, it was still great fun at this annual event. 14 cars attended with two cars in the concourse competition. The blue one below came first!

22nd January 2011 - Timour Hall

The first event of 2011 was the Timour Hall show where 10 of us showed our cars on Saturday, along with many other clubs, mostly of the suped up small German and American variety. The Sunday show of vintage cars was far more interesting, and with a larger turnout of cars.

12th December 2010 - Chaeli Champaign golf winners drive

7 members of the club donated their time and petrol to drive the lucky winners of the Chaeli Champaign golf day auction and two Protea Hotel representatives around the peninsular. The weather was very warm, and although the Cape Doctor was out in full force on the Cape Point side, it did give some relief from the 33 degree heat. We stopped at various locations, allowing the passengers to swop cars so as to experience the different versions. The sponsored lunch at the Protea Hotel President was spectacular, as was some of the talent around the swimming pool adjacent to our table.

21st November 2010 - Classics in the Bay, Hout Bay

After numerous weather checks and phone calls, 8 Cobra's ventured out to Hout Bay and were rewarded with a good turn out of other cars and spectators. Initially there were a few drops of rain, but it soon cleared up enough for us to even get a little sun-tan!

14th November 2010 - Live to Race, Killarney

Although only 4 Cobra's attended the last Live to Race event for 2010, a great day was had by all the children, despite it being a very hot day. As may be seen in the photo below, there were many children who wanted rides, so we certainly got plenty of track time.

17th October 2010 - V&A Waterfront display, breakfast, drive

I was trying to beat our previous number of cars at a venue, also the Waterfront, and we certainly did - 28 cars in total. OK, we had 3 hire cars too, but even 25 is a big increase over the 2008 record. The weather was superb with not a breath of wind, making it quite hot on the run through Sea Point, Camps Bay, Hout Bay. Chappies, to Dixies at Glencairn, where we stopped for a quick drink before heading back home.

25th September 2010 - Whales & Wheels show - Hermanus

Unfortunately only 6 Cobra's attended the annual car show in Hermanus this year, which was blessed with a glorious sunny day. I believe last year's rain was still on the minds of many entrants, not just the Cobra owners, as there were quite a few "regulars" missing from the event, which was well supported by the public who made good use of the long weekend to visit the whales!

29th August 2010 - Breakfast & run - Franschhoek

11 Cobras ventured out to Franschhoek for a great breakfast at Le Bistro, followed by a photo shoot in front of the monument. Even though it was sunny, it is still quite cold early in the morning, yet everyone seemed to enjoy the first run of the season.

9th August 2010 - LIVE TO RACE - Killarney

After many SMS's about the pouring rain, Monday cleared up enough for 6 Cobra's to venture out to Killarney for anothet Live To Race event organised by Joe. The track started off very wet, and a few folk decided to do some farming - some even some plouging! By the second session the sun had dried the track out a bit, just before a light drizzle made it exciting for some more of us who tried a little dancing on some of the corners, ending up pointing in the wrong direction! As usual, all the guests had a great time, as did we.

8th August 2010 - Atlantic Rail - Cape Town Station

Show rained Cobra display out, but steam engine did make it out!

8th May 2010 - FASHKOSH - Stellenbosch

The weather was very kind to the Stellenbosch Flying Club and their visitors for the FASHKOSH Fly In and mini air show. One GT40 was later joined by six Cobras. At about 13:30 the parking area was flooded with Harley Davidson motor cycles. The magnificent men and their flying machines were providing good access to their aircraft and kept the crowd entertained from about 11:00 with their “mini air show” that went on till well after 15:00. The Cobras had a drive past the crowd at 13:00 led by a flying club member in his white GT40 followed at the rear by one of our own members in his 40. He managed to organize a two way high speed “flip” down the airfield main runway while the Cobra parade was under way. He had to take a navigator, complete with radio, to regulate his movements from the control tower on an active air strip. He managed to change up all six gears but had to deal with a sticky open throttle on the second run in top. All ended well however. (John Davidson).

2nd May 2010 - Live to Race - Killarney

Spectacular weather welcomed about 65 children and 35 drivers at the Live to Race event organised by Joe Struwig at Killarney. 8 Cobra's went onto the track many times, much to the enjoyment of the large crowd, press and supporters. Two new members brought their cars to the track, and a few other members were there in their "tin-tops".

1st May 2010 - Driver Training - Killarney

After a sleepless night and visions of putting my cobra into the barrier I mustered up the courage – took my brave pill and set off to the track.

Thankfully there were very few novices and the track was relatively uncongested. One other Cobra joined on the day as well as a stunning Mustang fastback. All the rest were Porsche, Ferrari and BMW, which were no mach for the brute power of a V8. Every lap was exhilarating and fifteen minutes proving to be just as much as I could handle. This is a must do for everyone no matter your skill level!!

Ed - I believe Craig is looking for new engine parts !

28th March 2010 - Wine & chocolate tasing, lunch - Bilton Wine Estate

Wine, chocolates and Cobra's DO go together! This was the consensus of the 21 folk who attended the great wine & chocolate tasting followed by lunch at Bilton Wine estate in Stellenbosch. Only 5 Cobra's were there, but that didn't stop us having a very sociable outing in the glorious sunshine.

7th February 2010 - Execuline International Historic race day - Killarney

After much polishing and waxing, it was rather disappointing to wake up to the sound of rain! However, 13 Cobra's found their ways out from all over the peninsular and beyond, to Killarney where the weather played along and even became very hot in the afternoon. The classic racing was as usual, very entertaining, and we all got the opportunity to drive (very sedately) around the track at lunchtime. Peter Colebank & Peter Versfeld's cars were entered in the concourse competition, and were placed 2nd and 3rd behind an immaculate Triumph.

23rd January 2010 - Timour Hall show, Plumstead

This may sound strange after all my e-mails asking for extra cars for the show, but I was relieved only 8 arrived! This was due to one of the other clubs "invading" our space and us just managing to fit our cars into our usual corner. As per last year, there was a strange mix of cars, bikes and static engines on display, with our field along with the Mustangs, being declared by many as the most spectacular. A large crowd attended, and were very interested in the Cobra's, asking many questions and chatting to us.

10th January 2010 - Farmers Arms brunch, Riebeek West

While driving through the mist in town, I was concerned that the 100km drive to Riebeek West was going to be quite cool or even wet, but after meeting most of the cars at the N1 Engen, the sun came out and we had stunning weather. The breakfast at Farmers Arms was great and attended by about 20 people from as far away as Saldanha Bay, and even one local Cobra owner! Unfortunately Allesverloren was closed, so after not being able to buy some Port, we drove back on the R302/4, which is a great open road - ideal for snakes!

6th December 2009 - Speedway Cafe 105 breakfast and peninsular drive

What another glorious day in Cape Town - sun, no rain, no wind and 17 Cobras!  We started the day with breakfast at Speedway Cafe 105, where the service was so good we were ready for the drive half an hour earlier than expected. Then it was off on a tour of the peninsular where we looked down on the almost completed Cape Town stadium before taking Ocean View Drive to Camps Bay, Hout Bay, Chappies and finally a sprint hill climb up Red Hill before cruising back via Misty Cliffs and Kommetjie.

15th November 2009 - Classic Car Show - Parow

An early start saw 17 Cobra's attend the show along with about 1000 cars from many clubs belonging to the Cape Multi-MotorClub, who combined this year's show with the Hout Bay one. There were many spectators - way more than expected by the organisers, so I am sure it will become a regular event. The event is supposed to alternate with the venue in Hout Bay, which will be a challenge for the organisers. The best news is that we were introduced to three more members, so welcome guys.

18th October 2009 - Franschhoek Motor Museum

14 Cobra's attended a great day out in perfect sunshine at Franschhoek Motor Museum at L'Ormarins wine estate. Wayne Harley, the curator gave some very interesting facts about the cars in each building, with the most time spent discussing the old AC car and an original 289 (COB 6017), which he also started up. Many of the cars were opened, and some started for us. After lunch, we visited the workshop where some additional interesting vehicles are being worked on. A great visit, not to be missed again.

26th September 2009 - Hermanus Whales & Wheels

The weekend started with a pre-show braai on Friday night, with some great chatting about the cars, and especially about the weather prediction! The weather played along on Saturday morning as the show started with a drive through the town, with 11 Cobra's trailing the period cars and some Dart's. I think the Cobra's were the favourites, especially when we answered the call from the crowds for some revving and a little acceleration! The rain unfortunately could not stay away and by 1pm many of the cars were rushing off to the closest cover! Bravery awards should go to Dawie and Terry for venturing out without any covering, although the dog looked well covered!

23rd August 2009 - Kleinmond Brunch

It was a chilly start to a glorious day on which 6 Cobra's ventured off to Kleinmond for brunch. We met at Somerset Mall, and then proceeded over Sir Lowry's pass to Kleinmond. The company and weather was so great, we nearly stayed out long enough to miss the European GP!

9th August - Live to Race

Ten Cobra's joind the group of exotic cars during the lunch time slot for Live to Race at Killarney as part of the Women's Day events. We each took children in need for a couple of laps around the circuit, and I would say everyone really enjoyed the sunshine and petrol fumes! Well done to Joe Struwig for organising this event in combination with Reach for a Dream.

21st June 2009 - CAV factory visit

The rain stayed away long enough for a ride to visit CAV Auto Futura - the home of the awesome GT40 replica. Seven Cobra's arrived to see the manufacturing home of their cousin. There were some other folk in tintops who did not brave the cold. After the interesting walk around the factory and talk by Jean Fourie, 4 of us decided to take a short drive over Ou Kaapse Weg and down through Glencairn before heading off for a father's day lunch.

10th May 2009 - Potbelly Pantry breakfast run

After many cold and rainy days in Cape Town, the weather cleared up for a sunny weekend, and a last minute outing to the Potbelly Farm in Simondium was only attended by three cars - this because it was Mother's Day!

15th February 2009 - Uitkyk drive and picnic

We met at Sommerset West, and then proceeded over Sir Lowry's Pass, through Grabouw, and then down to Franschoek and finally ended up at the Uitkyk wine estate in Stellenbosch for a picnic. The weather was superb and 33 people attended in 11 Cobra's. On the way, we pulled off the Franschoek pass for a photo shoot.

7/8th February 2009 - Cape South Easter Historic Race Meeting - Killarney

Two days of great racing, with the Cape Cobra Club being able to take to the track at lunchtime on the second day. Unfortunately had to drive slowly behind a pace car, but still worth the few laps we were allowed.

24th January 2009 - Classic Car & Bike Show - Timour Hall

The organisers of this show decided to split the exhibits over two days in 2008, and so this year we were on display on Saturday along with other muscle cars and modified small cars. The public turnout was large, making the 7 hours that we needed to be there, go past quite quickly.
